A special showing of VESSEL
Wednesday March 25, 7pm
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto (s. of College, w. of Beverly)
About VESSEL: Rebecca Gomperts, horrified by the realities created by anti-abortion law around the world, felt compelled to challenge this. Her method: to provide abortions on a ship in offshore waters.
Her project, Women on Waves, begins as flawed spectacle, a media frenzy, faced with governmental, religious, and military blockades. But with each setback comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca has the revelation that she can use new technologies to bypass law – and train women to give themselves safe abortions using WHO-sanctioned protocols with pills.
We witness the creation of an underground network of emboldened, informed activists, working at the cutting edge of global reproductive rights, who trust women to handle abortion themselves. Vessel is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who heard and answered a calling, and transformed a wildly improbable idea into a global movement.

When: Tuesday, March 31, 7pm
Where: Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St, Toronto (Bathurst and Bloor)
This public meeting commemorates two of the greatest achievements of the modern Canadian feminist movement, when thirty years ago, working closely together with the labour movement, the historic legislative and judicial victories on pay and workplace equity and women’s reproductive rights were both won. This meeting brings two of the leading feminists who acted as the link and buckle with the labour movement in those victories of the mid-1980s together with two women activists who are engaged in a new generation of struggles on women’s reproductive rights and pay and workplace equity to discuss the legacy of these victories and assess their continuing impact and relevance today.
We hold regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Please email us at email@example.com for more information.

Rally for abortion rights – Don’t lose the right to choose!
Saturday October 22, 1 pm
north-east corner of College St. and University Ave., Toronto
Anti-choice organizations in Ontario are mobilizing to attempt to pressure the provincial government to defund abortion in this province. Join this counter-rally to defend reproductive rights! Don’t lose the right to choose!
Ontario Tory leader Tim Hudak signed a petition supporting defunding abortion, but when pressed recently to answer whether he would move to attack abortion rights if elected premier, he said “he would follow Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s lead and leave the abortion issue alone.” See http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2011/07/18/hudak-anti-abortion-petition652.html
With the Harper government excluding abortion funding from the maternal health initiative, constraining International Planned Parenthood and defunding groups that support reproductive rights, women know what ‘following Harper’s lead’ means: eroding abortion rights one step at a time.
The same Conservatives who are the architects of the current federal attacks on abortion are advising the provincial conservatives today. We need to mobilize and show that the pro-choice majority will fight back against attempts to take away our hard-won reproductive rights!
Organized by the Ontario Coalition for Abortion and the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada
